Over Card [Meaning] - MasterTerms.com

Over Card

Over Card is a term in poker that refers to a card in a player‘s hand that is higher than the highest card on the board. This term is significant in evaluating the strength of a player’s hand compared to potential hands that opponents may hold.

An over card can influence a player’s decision-making process during a hand. For example, if the board shows a 7, 5, and 2, and a player holds a Queen, the Queen is considered an over card. This can be advantageous as it may give the player the potential to make a higher pair or improve to a stronger hand if additional cards are drawn.

Over Card Example

For instance, in a Texas Hold’em game, if the community cards are 8, 6, and 4, and a player holds King and Queen, both of these cards are over cards since they are higher than any of the cards on the board. If the player decides to bet or raise, they could be representing a strong hand, hoping to push other players out of the pot.
