In blackjack, the dealer inserts the cut card into the deck after shuffling but before dealing to signify where the deck will be “cut.” This process ensures randomness in the distribution of cards. Typically, the player may be given the opportunity to place the cut card, but the dealer has the final say in where the deck will be divided. After the cut, the dealer places a portion of the deck behind the cut card, leaving the rest in front to begin the deal. This practice is also used to prevent card counting and to determine when the dealer will reshuffle the cards.
Cut Card Example
Example: In a blackjack game, after the dealer shuffles the cards, a player places the cut card approximately three-quarters of the way down the deck. The dealer cuts the deck at that point and begins dealing from the top portion.
