Continuation Bet [Meaning] - MasterTerms.com

Continuation Bet [CB]

A continuation bet, often abbreviated as c-bet, is a bet made by the player who took the last aggressive action before the flop, typically on the flop itself. This betting strategy is used to maintain the initiative in the hand and apply pressure on opponents, signaling strength even if the player has missed the flop.

In practice, a continuation bet is often made after the pre-flop raiser bets again on the flop, regardless of whether their hand has improved. The goal is to capitalize on the opponent’s uncertainty, forcing them to make a decision while the original bettor retains control of the hand. By frequently c-betting, players can build pots when they do hit strong hands and can also potentially take down pots by forcing opponents to fold weaker hands.

Continuation Bet Example

For example, if a player raises pre-flop with pocket aces and the flop comes 7♣, 5♦, 2♥, the player may choose to make a continuation bet of half the pot. This action puts pressure on opponents who may have missed the flop, often leading them to fold unless they have a strong hand or draw.
