A buried pair occurs when a player is dealt a pocket pair (two cards of the same rank) and none of the community cards on the board are of the same rank. This means the player’s pair is hidden from other players, as there’s no indication of it based on the community cards. It can give the player a strategic advantage because opponents are less likely to suspect the pair unless they closely observe betting patterns.
Buried Pair Example
For example, if a player is dealt two 9s (9♠ 9♥) and the board comes 3♣ 7♦ Q♠ 5♥ K♦, the pair of 9s is “buried” since no other 9 appears on the board, making it harder for opponents to read.
